Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Asia announces a vacancy for a Research Fellow based in Bangkok, Thailand. The position is full time, offered initially as a two-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding. SEI Asia, part of the global SEI network, hosts a diverse team of international experts who work at the intersection of scientific research, policy engagement and participatory development. The centre operates in affiliation with Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. This partnership supports joint research, capacity development, postgraduate training and a shared commitment to advancing sustainable, equitable development across Asia.

The ICCAP Programme

The Inclusive Climate Finance for Vulnerable Communities in the Asia Pacific (ICCAP) project is led by SEI Asia and funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI). ICCAP collaborates with financial service providers, public institutions and community partners to co-design and scale equitable financial solutions that improve climate resilience. A core component of the programme is the Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) team, which ensures that gender-responsive, intersectional approaches are embedded across research, capacity development and policy engagement. ICCAP prioritises the needs of low-income women, Indigenous Peoples, ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities and aims to strengthen their adaptive capacity across the Asia-Pacific region.

Role Overview

The Research Fellow will join the Gender, Environment and Justice (GenJust) research cluster, working closely with the Project Director and GESI lead. The role centres on leading GESI capacity development and coordinating a Gender-Transformative Pilot designed to address root causes of financial exclusion. This involves designing training programmes, facilitating peer exchange, supporting local partners and producing publication-quality research and guidance.

The position requires regular travel across Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Lao PDR and Nepal to support field research, training and pilot implementation. Prior experience in these countries, including local language skills, is considered an advantage.

Key Responsibilities

The Research Fellow will co-design and lead a Gender-Transformative Pilot with local partners, overseeing implementation, documentation and knowledge-sharing. They will manage capacity development for financial institutions, regulators and civil society partners through training, mentoring and on-the-job support.

The role includes planning and conducting fieldwork across multiple countries, ensuring ethical standards and high-quality data collection. The Fellow will convert research evidence into operational tools and guidance, produce toolkits, policy briefs and academic articles, and contribute to fundraising efforts.

The position also requires proactive representation of SEI and ICCAP in policy forums, strengthening networks and increasing uptake of project insights.

Accountability Expectations

The Research Fellow is expected to meet agreed deliverables on time and within budget, uphold high standards of ethics and safeguarding, and ensure robust coordination across the ICCAP project. They will help increase the visibility of project results and maintain constructive relationships with partners and colleagues.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an experienced researcher-practitioner with strong grounding in gender, justice and climate adaptation, combined with applied experience in inclusive or green finance. They are confident working with financial institutions, community groups and policy actors, and comfortable translating complex analysis into accessible guidance.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should hold a doctoral degree with at least five years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree with eight years of experience. They must demonstrate expertise in gender-responsive and transformative approaches, experience in capacity development and a record of first-author publications or practitioner toolkits.

Additional requirements include practical experience in inclusive or green finance, fieldwork leadership across countries, budgeting and financial management skills, fundraising experience and fluency in English.

Desirable Attributes

Regional experience in the Asia-Pacific, working knowledge of relevant local languages, competence in data analysis software and familiarity with research-to-policy processes are desirable. Applicants should demonstrate strong facilitation, writing, analytical and coordination skills, along with cross-cultural competence and a commitment to ethical research practice.
