University of Minnesota Hiring: Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Program Manager

The University of Minnesota Extension’s Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP) is inviting applications for the position of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Program Manager, a full-time leadership role based on the University’s St. Paul Campus. The successful candidate will oversee a portfolio of funded projects, supervise staff, and work collaboratively with Regional Executive Directors, researchers, and interdisciplinary teams to advance sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems across Minnesota.

About the Role

This role provides strategic leadership and coordination for RSDP’s sustainable agriculture and food systems initiatives. The selected Program Manager will play a central role in fostering innovative, community-University partnerships that connect academic research with practical, community-based solutions.

The position continues a strong legacy of initiatives such as deep winter greenhousesemerging crop supply chains (including garlic, hazelnuts, and Kernza®), rural grocery strategies, and on-farm food safety education. Building on these successes, the next Program Manager will expand efforts and lead new initiatives that address evolving rural community needs, environmental challenges, and future sustainability opportunities.

The Program Manager reports to the Assistant Statewide Director, U of M Regional Partnerships, and is responsible for leading RSDP’s statewide programmatic agenda in agriculture and food systems.

Key Responsibilities

The position covers a wide range of responsibilities, including project management, regional coordination, supervision, and relationship building:

1. Program and Project Portfolio Management (40%)

  • Develop strategic direction for statewide sustainable agriculture and food systems work, aligning with regional priorities.
  • Identify and secure internal and external funding opportunities, serving as Principal Investigator on projects.
  • Lead and monitor multi-disciplinary projects that advance sustainability and community innovation.
  • Manage the Deep Winter Greenhouse Program, ensuring grant deliverables, educational programming, and farmer engagement.
  • Direct outreach and education efforts to connect University research with community initiatives.

2. Regional Coordination (35%)

  • Collaborate with the five RSDP Regional Executive Directors to design community-led, regionally-based projects.
  • Coordinate cross-regional projects that address sustainability challenges.
  • Facilitate workshops, webinars, and educational events to strengthen knowledge-sharing among staff, faculty, and community partners.

3. Supervision (10%)

  • Lead statewide teams within the sustainable agriculture and food systems focus area.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise staff members while establishing clear goals and evaluation processes.
  • Participate in RSDP’s leadership team to ensure cohesive program delivery.

4. Relationship Development (15%)

  • Build and maintain partnerships with University faculty, staff, and students across multiple campuses.
  • Represent RSDP at University and community events, fostering connections that bridge research and practice.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Master’s degree in agricultural sciencessustainable food systemsurban planningpublic healthpolicy, or related fields.
  • At least four years of professional experience managing integrated projects related to food systems, environment, or community development.
  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing, project management, and stakeholder collaboration.
  • Supervisory experience and strong communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Minnesota.
  • U.S. work authorization (visa sponsorship not available).

Preferred qualifications include a PhD, experience with rural developmentadaptive leadership, and budget management, as well as strong facilitation and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

Compensation and Benefits

The position offers a salary range of $80,000–$95,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience. Employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes:
